Fewer Americans willing to vote for Bush: Poll

Washington, July 19 - US President George W Bush's
approval ratings continue to slide with rising American
casualties in Iraq, a ballooning budget deficit and
worsening unemployment, says a poll released by Time
magazine and CNN.

Only 50 per cent of those surveyed said they were "very"
or "somewhat likely" to vote for the President.

This is down from May this year, when about 56 per cent
said the same, and March, when more than 60 per cent said
they would vote for him.

However, two-thirds of the respondents think that Bush
will win the November 2004 presidential election.

When Democrats were asked who they would choose among
nine contenders for their party's presidential
nomination, the top choice was Connecticut Senator Joseph
Lieberman (16 per cent), followed by Massachusetts
Senator John Kerry (14 per cent) and Missouri
Representative Dick Gephardt (12 per cent).

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean surged into fourth
place, with 10 percent support, up from a high of four
percent in previous Time polls.

Dean dwarfed his rivals in campaign contributions in the
last quarter, picking up some seven million dollars in
the three months ending July 1.

The Time/CNN poll surveyed 1,004 US adults on July 16 and
17 and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per
cent.
